During a routine shift within a Western U.S. coal operation, the operator of a P&H 4100XPC shovel was loading haul trucks with overburden when he noticed an odd weakening in the "crowd" or forward-thrust force being applied to the dipper as it gathered up material during the hoist phase of the dig cycle. The shovel's GUI or graphical user interface did not reveal anything specific, no fault notices. So the operator reported the crowd force problem to mine maintenance and, in turn, the P&H MinePro Services office in Gillette, Wyoming.
