Before a young SME member can become a part of the Young Leaders Committee (YLC), he or she must be active and involved in the mining industry and in SME. There are 14 ways that leadership abilities can be demonstrated, and a prospective Young Leader has to demonstrate at least five to be accepted on the committee. Some of these include holding a position on an SME committee, being an SME officer, being an officer or member of a student-run SME committee, receiving awards, writing publications, holding management positions or participating in projects and leadership roles in a community or campus activity. By the time a person joins the YLC, he or she is already an active member of SME and the mining community.
