After a 12-year hiatus, the SME Wisconsin Local Section has been re-established and is planning its first event. Metal mining has been inactive in the state since 2000 when the Crandon project, a copper and zinc mine, was halted during the permitting stages. Significant events and conditions in the state have led to new mining opportunities. Wisconsin has excellent sand for hydraulic fracturing. There has been an exploration and potential development of a huge iron deposit in the northwestern part of the state.
