Without a doubt, the scope of China's coal boom has been nonstop. Despite the world economic slowdown, China's year-on-year gross domestic product (GDP) jumped 10.3 percent year-on-year in 2010, boosted by a faster than expected 9.8 percent expansion in the fourth quarter. And, the first quarter of 2011 expanded another 9.7 percent. According to a frequently cited statistic, the country is building two midsized coal plants each week. This amounts to a yearly increase equivalent to the entire power grid in the United Kingdom.
