A TWO-YEAR moratorium on new uranium mining near the Grand Canyon will expire on July 21. The U.S. Interior Department can either let the moratorium expire and open the lands to uranium mining, or extend it for 20 years. A number of uranium mining companies already have rights on public lands in the area that the decision would not affect and they are eager to expand to the blocked lands if the moratorium is lifted.
