PEABODY ENERGY, the largest coal company in the United States, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as the coal industry grapples with the fallout of low natural gas prices, costly regulations and China's economic slowdown. The announcement is the latest in a growing line of bankruptcies from coal companies. According the USA Today, some 50 coal companies have already filed including large coal companies such as Arch Coal, Patriot, Alpha Natural Resources and Walter Energy.
