Many people believe the mining industry is composed of people more interested in the almighty dollar than in the environment. This albatross has long plagued the industry's reputation. And it has served as an effective stereotyping, regardless of its truth. I reject these concepts. I also reject the notion that everyone in the mining industry believes we should be able to mine without regard to employees, local communities or the environment. But I guess I am wrong because the mining industry spent 9 million dollars to study how we can be better citizens. Unfortunately, this study is also predicated on the same stereotypic profile. The study's conclusion is that we must always strive to be better. But its defeatist tone is disappointing, as is its acceptance of the world's mischaracterization of the industry's behavior.
