World salt consumption increased to an estimated 190 to 205 Mt (209 million to 226 million st) during 2000. This increase was due mostly to increasing demand in the countries of Southeast Asia and other developing nations, according to a report by Roskill (see related feature article about salt cake on page 17).The report estimated that in the immediate future, salt consumption will increase by 2 percent to 3 percent a year. However, this increase depends on continued demand from the chloralkali sector. And that sector could fall due to the economic downturn in the United States at the end of 2001, and on its less predictable consumption as a de-icer on roads.
