Slateco International Group is making plans to enter the global marble market. Slateco International is a new company, formed in January 2002, as the result of a three-way merger. Slateco International, of Las Vegas, NV is acquiring an idled quarry in Nye County, NV that contains white, yellow and black marble. The company plans to have the quarry operating within 90 days of the acquisition. The company would be the only producer of quality white marble, known as Carrara, in the United States. This would give Slateco International a major price advantage over imports from Brazil and Italy. Slateco International said it has a contract pending with a large retail outlet for about 9.5 Mt/a (10.5 million stpy) of marble tiles.
