In 2001, rare-earth production in the United States came from one mine in California. Major uses for these commodities were in automotive catalytic converters, petroleum fluid-cracking catalysts, permanent magnets, glass-polishing compounds, ceramics, meta-alloying additives and rechargeable batteries. Consumption of refined rare-earth products decreased slightly as the domestic economy was in a recession. The United States was a major importer and exporter of rare earths in 2001. Yttrium was not mined or refined domestically during 2001. China, France, Japan and the United Kingdom accounted for most of the US supply of yttrium compounds for refined yttrium products.
