In my first column, I would like to talk about SME - the strategic plan implementation and needed actions. I firmly believe that the best for the US mining industry is still ahead of us. Attaining that future will require greater attention to a lot more details than ever before. Whatever one may like to call it - reinventing, re-engineering, total quality management or continuous quality improvement-the underlying assumption in all of these is that there are better ways, more effective and efficient ways to achieve our goals. Also, as we scale new heights of performance, the scale is inevitably raised. We must anticipate the changes in expectations. Change is the key word here. Change is a difficult thing. It destroys assumptions that are held sacred. It poses new challenges. Yet change opens up new opportunities. The challenge to the minerals industry is to achieve optimum utilization of the nation's mineral endowment without causing unacceptable disturbance to the environment. The challenge to the minerals educator is to prepare scientists, engineers and managers for this reality. Professional societies are no different. They are profoundly affected by the changes in the workplace and in the educational fronts. The challenge to the Society is to be relevant.
