SME President Bob Freas asked me to write this column. He suggested I convey my thoughts regarding my first year at SME and what I might envision for the organization at least in the short-term. Fair enough. As the rookie, an outsider and a nonmining professional, I believe I can bring a modicum of objectivity to an assessment of SME. ot unexpectedly, this year I have received much advice about my job, the SME, the AIME, the Board, the ladder structure, the history of SME, etc. I am convinced all of those offering advice had the good of SME at heart in attempting to enlighten someone who needed guidance. Disturbingly, a substantial part of this advice revolved around what is wrong with SME. ome of the comments: It is a good old boys club, its publications and meetings are not relevant, the Society is out of touch with its members, it is too academic, it is not technical enough, it is too technical, its services are not what I need, we need more involvement of the major mining companies, we need less major mining company involvement, we are not political enough, we are too political, we need to publish more on this and less on that, and so forth. s all that true? Of course not. Is it all false? Of course not. However, these incredible differences of opinion and conflicts point to what I perceive as SME's most valuable strength - complete mining industry diversity. SME's diversity of professional members traverses virtually all the many niches of the mining industry. In doing so, the Society stands apart from other mining associations.
