The Santa Cruz Joint Venture plans to start in situ copper mining in 1996 at its test facility near Casa Grande, AZ. The Santa Cruz Joint Venture is a cooperative government/industry research project. Involved are the US Bureau of Mines, Asarco Santa Cruz Inc. and export Copper Co. In situ mining uses weak chemical solutions 10 selectively recover minerals from rock. The rock itself and the surface remain basically undisturbed. This technique produces practically no waste, leaves the land virtually unscarred and avoids other environmental and safety problems associated with conventional mines. In situ mining could make it economic: o work deposits that are now too low-grade or too deep to be mined. "The Bureau began studying in situ mining in the 1970s as an environmentally sound alternative," said William Larson, research supervisor with the bureau of Mines.
