Sustainable development and surety bonding are two of the major issues facing the mining industry, according to the National Mining Association (NMA). In its year-end report, the association discussed some the mining industry's accomplishments during the past year and examined what lay ahead for this year. In March 2002, the NMA formed a committee of senior mining executives to develop a policy addressing sustainable development. The group developed a pledge that demonstrates the mining industry's commitment to be proactive and continue operations in the best possible manner. The pledge states that NMA members will integrate social, environmental and economic principles in their mining operations from start to finish.
