Barrick Gold Corp., in conjunction with SNC-Lavalin Engineers and Constructors, developed a basic engineering design for a countercurrent-decantation thickener (CCD) plant capable of processing 44 kt/d (48,500 stpd). To achieve this throughput in a single train, the largest high-rate thickeners installed to date were used in concert with large process slurry and solution-transport systems. Process reliability and plant operability and maintainability were considered in the development of a practical, yet cost-effective, design. The design also addresses the challenges associated with the installation of large equipment and structures in a remote, climatically hostile environment located in a high-seismic-activity zone.
