As the new president of the SME Foundation (SMEF), it is my pleasure to introduce you to your Foundation. Based on recent discussions I've had with several members, it has become apparent that a substantial segment of SME's membership may not be aware of the Foundation's existence or its mission. Consequently, I have made it a priority in the coming months to clarify what the SME Foundation does, what its mission is, and what its main initiatives are. The low profile of the SMEF is understandable. Until now, our mode of operation has been primarily to grow the corpus so that its investment revenue can fund important projects and programs of the society. Since inception, the SMEF has provided financial support for SME's Government Education and Mining Program (GEM), the SME Web site, scholarships and community and outreach projects.
