摘要

With damage estimates at more than 100 billion dollars and climbing, Hurricane Katrina was the largest natural disaster, in economic terms, to strike the United States. The hurricane struck the Gulf Coast on Aug. 29 and flooded most of New Orleans, LA and other cities and towns located along the lower Mississippi River. However, traffic along the lower part of the river began moving again in early September. The shipping channel between Baton Rouge, LA and the Gulf of Mexico was opened by the U.S. Coast Guard the first week of September. By Sept. 8, about 50 percent of prestorm traffic was moving.
