Polaris Minerals began construction of a sand and gravel plant in Port McNeill on Vancouver Island. The Orca sand and gravel operation is a joint venture between Polaris Minerals and two of Vancouver Island's First Nations communities. Sand and gravel production from the Orca facility is expected to begin in 2007. Initial production is expected to be 1.4 Mt/a (1.54 million stpy). Full capacity is expected to be reached in seven years when it will ship about 5.4 Mt/a (6 million stpy) to California. The plant will have a 25-year life. Net sales revenues from the sand and gravel plant in the first year of operation are projected to be 13.2 million dollars. That should increase to 81.5 million dollars when the plant reaches full capacity.
