摘要

Coal is king of West Virginia mining. Other economic minerals produced include limestone, sandstone, gravel, clay and other nonfuel materials. Limestone production figures for 2005 are not available as this article was written. In 2004, limestone production was 14.9 Mt (16.42 million st). It accounted for 85.7 percent of noncoal production on a tonnage basis. Aggregate is the largest use for West Virginia's limestone. Additional uses for low-silica limestone include steel production, fluegas desulfurization, fluidized bed combustion, wastewater treatment, various chemical applications and rock dust for the coal industry.
