The North American Coal Corp. received a 2006 U.S. Office of Surface Mining National Award for Excellence in surface coal mining reclamation for landscape stabilization and loblolly pine reforestation at its Red Hills Mine in Choctaw County, MS on Sept. 21 in Washington, D.C. The award was given during the National Mining Association's annual conference. It recognizes the Red Hills Mine's development of methods to quickly stabilize reclaimed landscapes and drainages. The mine used a combination of mulch, quick growing cover crops, temporary grasses, erosion control fabrics and specialized rock structures. And the company established loblolly pine forests and fish and wildlife habitats.
