Despite copper production falling slightly, Chile's Corporacion Nacional del Cobre de Chile (Codelco) reported a 4.9-billion dollars surplus last year, up from 3.3 billion dollars in 2004. The increase was due to high copper prices. Codelco is a state-owned entity. So the company reports a surplus instead of profits. About 826 million dollars of the surplus will go to Chile's armed forces under the country's Ley Reservada legislation. That was 38.1 percent higher than in 2004. And 2.3 billion dollars are taxes. Codelco's copper production during 2005 decreased by 0.4 percent to 1.83 Mt (2.01 million st), the company said. The company's net cathode costs in 2005 increased to 55.7 cents/lb. That was up from 38.1 cents/lb in 2004. Codelco attributed that increase to increases in oil, shipping and other costs.
