Some events affecting the global mining industry are hard to predict. But most big picture events have their roots in long-lasting trends. For example, consider the currently high commodity prices. They have their cause in the growth of the economies of the world's largest-population countries - China and India. This means that the trends that will effect mining during the next decade or so have their roots in what is happening today. Here are some thoughts on what today's trends may mean for the global mining sector 10 years from now, in 2016. In much of the developed world, mining companies that depended on the demographic bulge that began soon after the end of World War II have had to re-think their staffing plans. This large force of trained workers has walked out of the gates for the last time, despite the efforts of companies to entice recently retired workers back for a few more years of work.
