摘要

As part of its study on the challenges for expanded coal production in the United States, the National Commission on Energy Policy, a bipartisan group of top energy experts from industry, government, labor, academia, and environmental and consumer groups, began conducting scoping meetings to gather input from key stakeholders. On Sept. 17, the commission was in Denver, CO where it solicited thoughts about the future of coal from more than 20 stakeholders. Because of its abundance in the United States, coal will likely remain a significant component in the nation's fuel mix. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently projected that, in order to meet the energy demands for the U.S. in the next 20 to 30 years, coal production will need to increase from the current level of 1.1 Gt/a to 1.6 Gt/a (1.2 billion stpy to 1.8 billion stpy) or more.
