The Powder River Basin in northern Wyoming put that state in the forefront of America's coal boom and now it appears the state will again be at the center of the next rush for energy. With the renewed interest in nuclear energy, 94 mining plans have been submitted to federal regulators to mine uranium in Wyoming. The claims span 33,590 hm~2 (83,000 acres) of federal lands in Wyoming. Among the biggest uranium players in Wyoming are Energy Metals Group, Cameco and High Plains Uranium. Canadian-based Energy Metals has acquired more than 80,940 hm~2 (200,000 acres) in the western United States, including 4,249 hm~2 (10,500 acres) in Wyoming. The company has 2,823 claims on record and has drilled 65 exploratory wells.
