SME members expressed thoughtful concern with the board of directors' decision to decrease education and public information(SME Foundation) support at its October 1994 meeting. Concern has led to extensive dialoginvolvingthe board, sections and ourselves. Education is good business and is good for business. If the minerals industry is to have any king of future in the United States, SME needs to lead education and public information programs for students and the public as well as for elected and appointed local, state and federal officials. This will require substantial changes in priorities, resource allocation and direction and multiyear commitment. Constructive steps were taken to strengthen education and public information at the 1995 Annual Meeting in Denver, CO. The authors support these. However, SME's follow-through in 1995 is essential. We encourage further steps by SME's new leaders and request the sup-port of concerned members. Get involved with local programs. Section or GEM chairs and SME members from at least 16 states expressed serious concern and the need for accelerated earth science and public information programs. There were 6998 SME members living in these 16 states as of Jan. 1, 1994. This is 42 percent of SME's membership. And it is 51 percent of the members living in the. United States.
