Foreign investment helps boost Bolivia's gold industry

Gold has become the new star of Bolivia's once-moribund mining industry. Planned investments in the gold-mining sector are expected to total 150 million US dollars. Meanwhile, gold output has increased by a factor of 20 during the past 10 years. During 1994, precious metals production reached 12.84 t (412,800 oz), up from 560 kg (18,000 oz) during 1985. Gold exports during 1994 were worth 119.1 million US dollars, according the Central Bank. This beat traditional Bolivian mining mainstays tin, zinc and antimony to become the country's second most important export. Gold exports were beaten by jewelry, which reaped export income of 141.7 million dollars. Jewelry exports were up from 58 million dollars in 1993.
