The current major initiatives of the National GEM Committee include long-range plan (Target 2000) development, education of SME members about the Endangered Species Act reauthorization and improved coordination of GEM programs with other mining public education organizations. GEM surveys in process A critical step in the long-range planning process is a much-needed assessment of our program. In order to accomplish this task, we are undertaking three surveys: a telephone survey of the local GEM Committee chairs to gain an understanding of local activity levels and program direction; a general SME membership survey to gain a sense of the general membership's knowledge of GEM, the importance of the program and depth of support; and identification of other organizations involved in mining public education to determine how GEM can work with these organizations to maximize our joint efforts. It is our intent to complete the surveys by Aug. 31,1995 and analyze the data in September. At that point, we will have sufficient data to set annual GEM goals through the year 2000. This study will help GEM focus on specific education initiatives, define resource needs and availability and identify what GEM organization changes are needed to accomplish defined goals. If you are called on to provide information, please take the time to fully and accurately answer the questions. We will make the surveys easy to fill out. And the information you provide will be vital to the GEM Committee's program assessment and planning process.
