The public hearing process in mine development in the United States - or most any other business development, for that matter - is sometimes viewed as a necessary evil. Actually, public hearings are a good thing for the industry. Not only do companies get a feel for public support, or nonsupport, for their projects, they gain a better understanding of what communities want from a mine. In speaking with many mining company managers throughout the years, I have found that most believe local residents generally support mining activities once all of the facts are laid out for them. Most, though, do not voice that support out loud. Instead, public hearings are usually packed with opponents of the project, and many of them are imported to be the voices of opposition. These opponents are well organized and well coached. That is not always the case with mine supporters.
