During 2000, 89 new metallic mineral leases were issued on state lands in Aitkin, Carlton, Lake and St Louis counties. On Oct. 16,2000, eight parties submitted 65 bids for state leases to prospect for and mine metallic minerals. The bids covered 56 mining units containing a total of 82 km~2 (20,160 acres). Bids were submitted on seven mining units in Carlton County, 16 mining units in Lake County and 33 mining units in St. Louis County. The number of bids received and the quality of the bidding companies demonstrate continued interest in Minnesota's mineral potential.Lehmann Exploration Management is managing the project at Birch Lake for the Beaver Bay Joint Venture. This joint venture includes North Central Mineral Ventures, Powell Production and Connor Management. The Beaver Bay Joint Venture has entered into an agreement with Imp ala Platinum Holdings. The partners are exploring and evaluating the Birch Lake project for copper, nickel, platinum, palladium, gold and rhodium. Eleven borings were completed in 2000 and are now being evaluated. The deposit is between 490 and 850 m (1,600 and 2,800 ft) deep.
