After years of barely getting by, the domestic coal industry is finally seeing some relief. This is due to rising natural gas and electricity prices, the energy crisis in California and an early, colder winter in much of the nation.These factors have electric utilities and independent power producers looking to add more coal to their generating capacities as a way to lower their costs. And the result has been a 36 percent increase in the spot price of coal during the past year as well as an increase in coal stock prices. In addition, inventories for coal producers have fallen about 20 percent since January 2000.
