SME's Carolinas Section held its summer meeting on June 8-9, 2001 at the Little Switzerland Inn, Spruce Pine, NC. The Spruce Pine area is a major producer of feldspar, mica, high-purity quartz, olivine, gemstones and decorative flagstone. About 30 members toured Feldspar Corp.'s feldspar mine and plant, the North Carolina Mineral Museum and the Tar Heel Mica Plant, which offered a rare opportunity to see sheet mica being processed. They also panned for gemstones at the North Carolina Mining Museum of Emerald Village.
