Federal investigators discovered a map that shows the operators of the Quecreek Mine did not have the most recent survey when the accident occurred. Them ore recent map shows more extensive mining areas in the abandoned Saxman Mine that were not shown on the maps used by Quecreek personnel. In July, nine men were trapped in the Quecreek Mine in Somerset County for 77 hours until they were rescued (ME, September, pp.33-35). The mine flooded when the miners broke through to an abandoned mine, even though they thought they were hundreds of feet away from it.
