Improved gold prices and a reduction in its hedge book allowed Newmont Mining to post a 32-percent profit increase during the second quarter of this year. Newmont, the world's largest gold mining company, reported a net income of 90.8 million dollars during the second quarter, or 22 cents a share. That compares with 69 million dollars during the same period in 2002, or 17 cents a share. Revenue during the second quarter of 2003 jumped to 747.2 million dollars versus 643.7 million dollars in 2002's second quarter. For the first half of 2003, Newmont's net income was 208.1 million dollars, up from 58.5 million dollars during the same period in 2002. Wayne Murdy is Newmont's chairman and chief executive officer. He said the large increase in profits during the second quarter was the result of higher gold prices and the company's reduction of its hedge book. Newmont reduced its hedge to 6 t (195,000 oz) as of June 30 from 115 t (3.7 million oz) three months earlier.
