Cambior, a Canadian gold producer, is nearing an agreement with the government of Guyana to buy an 80 percent interest in the Linden Mining Enterprise (Linmine). Government-owned Linmine is one of Guyana's bauxite producers. The sale is part of Guyana's privatization program to revitalize the country's mining industry. For several years, the government has been trying unsuccessfully to privatize Linmine and Berbice Mining Enterprise, another bauxite producer. Cambior currently operates the Omai gold mine. The 7.8- to 9.3-t/a (250,000- to 300,000-oz/year) mine has provided a large portion of Guyana's income. However, Omai is expected to exhaust its gold reserves by 2005.
