Part one of Ann-Mane Davies' column on decisionmaking appeared in the July issue of ME on pages 7 and 8. The last article described some common pitfalls with decisionmaking, looking at processes and why faulty thinking occurs. This article continues this theme, looking at specific issues and methods to resolve them. Most people will seek confirming evidence and disregard or neglect data that does not support their cause. Additionally, because a person has an interest in a particular outcome, data supporting the alternatives will appear less than fascinating. If a decision maker is influential, others will understand what kind of data he requires and seek to accommodate his needs. How will they know? Clearly, if the decision maker is presenting an idea and asking for evidence to support it, the context has already been framed before independent analysis has a chance to occur.
