The North American gypsum product industry is cyclical. During the late 1990s and into early 2000, demand for gypsum products was strong, particularly for gypsum board. So gypsum board manufacturers in North America opened several new plants. But beginning in late 2001 and continuing into 2002, the combination of capacity increases and weaker construction demand left the industry in a situation of overcapacity. This resulted in a drop in gypsum board prices. As a result, many industry participants began to rationalize their capacity. A report by the Freedonia Group said that demand for gypsum products in North America is expected to increase 2.1 percent a year through 2007 to 46.8 Mt (51.6 million st). Gains as measured in dollar value will fare even better, rising 4.1 percent a year to 4 billion US dollars in 2007.
