摘要

This paper described a cost-effective system to deliver real time process data to plant decisionmakers over wireless networks. Concerns about security were addressed for the single pipeline connection from the plant historian to a remote Web-hosted data server. The WEP and PalmNet security protocols were discussed, providing baseline information for decisionmakers considering adopting this technology. Potential users of wireless technology need to understand the high levels of security provided by this architecture. In the early 1990s, Internet users were loath to enter their credit card numbers when ordering goods over the network. Most early Internet resellers had a phone number on the Web page for customers to place orders. However, by 1995, https and early authentication systems became prevalent. In 2001, more than 160 million users each day enter their credit card numbers in their Web browser. Furthermore, to date, there has not been a single case of someone cracking the 128-bit SSL security layer. So Internet use in commerce has come of age. The same is true for the Web-based access of real time process data.
