摘要

The disastrous Argonaut Mine fire occurred on Aug. 27,1922. It was the United States' worst gold mine disaster. Located in California's historic Mother Lode district, it was one of the nation's richest and deepest gold mines. On the night of the fire, 47 men were working underground. Some had not taken a day off in more than 20 days. Soon after their dinner break, the miners' apprehension proved justifiable when the worst happened-a fire started in the shaft, trapping them 1,420 m (4,650 ft) underground with no apparent way out. The author has done a remarkable job of describing the tragic events as they unfolded. This reviewer is a hard-rock miner who has worked with many western tramp miners and later as a mining engineer. So I was skeptical that a lay writer could adequately describe the events that took place with the correct hard-rock miner terminology. Mace, however, has researched the subject so well that the reader will think that the story was written by a mining engineer.
