Charles L. (Chuck) Pillar died Dec. 5,2003. Pillar had retired in 1987 after a 50-year career as a mining engineer, mine developer and executive. His influence in the worldwide mining industry has been significant, particularly in his contributions to underground mining and block-caving practices. Pillar was born in Denver, CO, May 25, 1911. In 1935, he earned his engineer of mines degree from the Colorado School of Mines (CSM). He then joined Park City Consolidated Mines in Utah where he progressed from mucker to shift boss. He joined St. Joe Minerals in 1937 and, for the next five years, worked as foreman, mine engineer and assistant mine supervisor.
