Environmental stewardship plays a large role in how Progress Energy strives for excellence in meeting the future electricity needs of its customers. An outstanding example is the Nines Energy Complex in Polk County, Florida, which is located on a former phosphate mine. Because phosphate companies pride themselves in conducting work that uses land only temporarily, land can be reclaimed for future use once mining is completed. Progress Energy viewed this location as ripe for conversion to a power block and took extra steps to protect and enhance the environment surrounding the site, including using energy-efficient technology, reclaiming and using wastewater and protecting the wildlife surrounding the plant.
