Barrick Gold acquired High Desert Mineral Resources of Nevada, giving the Toronto-based company a 40 percent interest in the High Desert gold property that is located near Barrick's Goldstrike property. Newmont Gold Co. owns the remaining 60 percent of the High Desert property and is the operator. The High Desert property is located about 3 km (2 miles) from Goldstrike. It is estimated to contain several million ounces of gold mineralization with grades ranging from 10.3 to 20.6 g/t (0.3 to 0.6 oz/ st). In addition, the property is a promising exploration area, Barrick said, because only a small portion of it has been explored so far.
