摘要

Ioseph J. Hanzel is the recipient of the 1995 individual GEM award "in recognition of his going to great lengths to broaden public knowledge of mining and the minerals industry through his contact with Bay-area schools and colleges." Hanzel graduated with a BA from the University of Hawaii. He first worked in mining at the University of Arizona School of Mines' San Xavier project, under the direction of Edward Jucevic. He later worked for Anaconda and Cyprus Mines. Since moving to the San Francisco Bay area, Hanzel has been very active in the San Francisco Section of SME and has been chairman of GEM and Student Affairs for the past several years. In addition to organizing GEM activities for Bay-area elementary and high schools, Hanzel coordinates an annual competitive award for university undergraduates majoring in minerals and earth science.
