摘要

THE U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has toughened its regulations for airborne mercury emissions from U.S. gold mines under provisions of the Clean Air Act. The new regulations permit 38 kg (84 lbs) of mercury emissions for every million tons of ore processing by mines using autoclaves and roasters. Existing precious metals operations now produce 59 kg (129.6 lbs) of mercury emission per one million tons of ore. According to NGO Earthworks, a Washington, D.C.-based organization, eight of the 12 top emitters of mercury are in Nevada. The regulations also impact mines in Alaska, California, Colorado, Montana, South Dakota and Washinton.
