Ever since it first displayed an autonomous mining truck at the 1996 MinExpo show in Las Vegas, NV, Caterpillar has been building the blocks to a fully autonomous mine. In May, the company unveiled another block in that progression, the new Cat MineStar System that it says is "the industry's broadest, most comprehensively integrated miner operations and mobile equipment management system." The full system is comprised of five capability sets — Fleet, Terrain, Detect, Health and Command — to help operators define the size and scope of their management system based on the needs of their mining operations.
