NDER PLANS announced on Nov. 18, the United Kingdom will close its coal-fired plants by 2025 and become the world's first major economy to move away from coal as its primary power source. To replace the energy produced by burning coal, the United Kingdom will turn to nuclear power and natural gas plants to complement intermittent renewable energy, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change Amber Rudd said. "It cannot be satisfactory for an advanced economy like the UK to be relying on polluting, carbon-intensive 50-year-old coal-fired power stations," she said at the Institution of Civil Engineers.
