The task force's goal is to create a plan that uses domestic energy supplies and less foreign resources.Vice President Dick Cheney will head an eight-member, cabinet-level interagency task force to create a long-term national energy policy. It will be designed to increase the use of domestic energy supplies and lessen the nation's reliance on foreign sources. Members of the committee include the secretaries of Energy, Commerce, Interior, Treasury, Transportation and Agriculture. The head of the US Environmental Protection Agency will also be involved. The task force will focus primarily on using coal, oil and natural gas from domestic sources. The group will also make recommendations for research on solar and other renewable resources. In addition, the group is expected to recommend ways to weave together stringent clean air policies developed by the Clinton administration with the nation's increasing demand for energy. The aim is to make it easier to get permission to build needed new power plants throughout the country.
