After months of trying, Placer Dome will finally get control of Australia's AurionGold. In October, AurionGold's board of directors agreed to Placer Dome's 750-million U.S. dollars takeover bid. Placer Dome launched its initial bid on May 27, 2002. Since then, the company extended its offer nine times until AurionGold finally capitulated. AurionGold said Placer Dome's bid was inadequate and its large South African holdings were too risky. Placer Dome responded that AurionGold's share price was artificially increased by the takeover offer. Placer Dome also said the two companies already had enmeshed assets, with stake holdings in two mines.
