The oil shale in Colorado's Piceance Basin is said to hold as much oil as the oil fields of Saudi Arabia. For decades, oil companies have tried different methods to release the kerogen locked in the shale and turn it into crude oil. But the high cost of heating the shale to release the kerogen, coupled with oil's low price, forced most companies to walk away.Now, however, Shell Exploration and Production believes it is closer to unlocking the secret to recovering oil from the shale. The company is testing a new type of electric heater that has shown some success in cost effectively releasing the kerogen from the shale. The electric heaters are lowered into the drill holes. They heat the shale to between 260 deg to 315 deg C (500 deg and 600 deg F) and melt the oil-containing kerogen. The resulting liquid is then pumped to the surface, just like a normal oil well. This method eliminates the high cost of mining the shale, hauling it to processing facilities and cooking it in large, expensive retort systems.
