摘要

Over the objections of Nevada's congressional delegation and the state's governor, the House and Senate approved Yucca Mountain as the repository for the nation's high-level nuclear waste. In July, the Senate voted 60-39 to send the waste to Yucca Mountain, about 145 km (90 miles) northwest of Las Vegas. The House, in May, voted 306-117 in favor of the site. The votes cleared the way for the U.S. Department of Energy to proceed with the project. The agency must now get a license for the facility from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. That process could take up to five years. None of the estimated 70 kt (77,000 st) of waste would be moved to Yucca Mountain before 2010, the earliest the facility would be ready.
