摘要

Vermiculite is an altered mica that contains trapped water that is released upon the application of high heat (870 deg C or 1,598 deg F). This causes the silicate sheets to separate into an accordion-shaped, lightweight aggregate about 45 times the size of the original particle. This conversion process is referred to as exfoliation. It results in lightweight, insulating, inert, highly absorbent, and nonreactive functional filler. Vermiculite is mined from shallow (<25 m or 82 ft) surface deposits throughout the world. The two largest producers are Palabora Mining in South Africa (ore stock is a phylogopite mica) and W.R. Grace & Co., in Enoree, SC (ore stock is a biotite mica).
